May is birthday month for founder and EIC Carter Brighton! To celebrate, we're making subs FREE for our May cycle!

**Due to the sheer amount of submissions that come with free subs, our submission cycle for May is truncated, and ends early on April 30th (instead of our typical cycle of ending on the 10th of the following month). Please plan your submitting timeframe accordingly!**

G&G is looking for short stories steeped in the genres of horror, fantasy, and dark fiction. Humanity’s oldest forms of storytelling are rooted in mythology and folklore - narratives that played a fundamental role in society, whether it be to explain the origin of the world or to warn against evil in the vast and seemingly infinite wilderness. This is not to say all submissions are required to be contained within some version of Middle Earth - far from it. We want to read from BOTH literary and genre spaces, with strong characters that reflect upon the human condition and facets of society. Urban/contemporary fantasy, magical realism, and science fiction are all welcome and encouraged.

Guidelines

While G&G is open to both literary and genre fiction, we are most interested in stories that contain elements of fantasy, horror, high fantasy, magical realism, science fiction, urban fantasy, horror, contemporary fantasy, fairy tales, Gothic, steampunk, and thriller.

  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with standard one-inch margins.
  • Submissions should be no longer than 6,000 words.
  • Please use .doc, .docx, or .odt file formats only.
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed - but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • Submissions that do not follow these guidelines may face automatic rejection.
  • At this time, Grim & Gilded only accepts previously unpublished work.

IMPORTANT: Please do not withdraw and re-submit your work. Please only submit ONCE per category (flash fiction, poetry) per submission cycle.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Grim & Gilded's rigorous publishing schedule and small team size, we are unable to engage in cooperative workshopping/lengthy editing before the issue is released. The overall completeness and "correctness" of your piece is considered among the various features we look for when reviewing for potential publication.

PLEASE, NO AI GENERATED TEXT.

By submitting to Grim & Gilded, you authorize us to publish your work in our online literary journal (www.grimandgilded.com), as well as feature your piece in audio format (i.e. podcast).

Rights

You own your work, and all rights associated with it. For any pieces selected for audio presentation, Grim & Gilded retains a 3 month audio exclusivity period during which time your piece will not be performed in any other recorded audio narrative medium without written consent from Grim & Gilded. In-person performances (such as open mic nights, poetry slams, spoken word performances, etc) are the exception and do not require the waiting period/written permission. Pieces may be published in text form by the author at any time after initial publication by G&G.

Payment

At this time, Grim & Gilded is unable to offer payment for published submissions. As we expand and grow, hopefully this will evolve as well. Please consider contributing to our Ko-Fi tip jar as we attempt to build a fund for author payments: https://ko-fi.com/grimandgilded

G&G is an online literary journal focused in the genres of horror, science fiction, and dark fiction/fantasy. You can read more about the journal at www.grimandgilded.com.

We are looking for pieces that continue G&G's focus of finding the beauty in darkness- the gold among the blackened fear and horror. We are open to reviewing photography, drawings/sketches, paintings, mixed media, and more - if you think it fits the theme of the magazine, send it our way!

That being said, please adhere to the following Guidelines:

  • By submitting a piece for consideration you state that you have the rights to do so, and that G&G is not violating rights held by another organization by publishing your work.
  • Please use only .jpg/.jpeg or .png formats.

PLEASE, NO AI GENERATED ART.

Guidelines - Poetry

  • While we hate to limit creativity, we ask that poems be left or right-aligned only (no wildly differing indents or spacing, or poems constructed to create the shape of an object, such as a heart). While we HAVE accepted these formats in the past, they are often incredibly difficult to format in the journal, and we run the risk of not being able to match your original vision. We apologize for the limitations.
  • Please use 12pt Times New Roman font (or similar)
  • Please use .doc, .docx, or .odt file formats only.
  • Grim & Gilded accepts up to three poems per submission. If submitting multiple poems, please submit all pieces in one document.
