On Friday, June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion.

Abortion is Healthcare. Bodily Autonomy is a Right.

Art in times of crisis is crucial. It is anger, joy, fear, sadness, hope, rage, and catharsis. From day one, G&G's mission statement has been to be a safe place for ideas manifested from the human spirit to land; a place where readers can be impacted and changed by the words knit into the fabric of the universe by the creator - the artist.

Grim & Gilded is open for submissions for a Special Issue - 100% of proceeds will be donated equally among the three following organizations:

Indigenous Women Rising

In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda

Abortion Care Network

We encourage you to visit each organization's website. If you do not wish to submit a piece here, please consider donating to them directly.

The theme for this issue is Rise. This issue is open to poetry and flash fiction. While Grim & Gilded typically only looks for pieces within the realm of dark, gothic, sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres, there are no such restrictions here for this issue.

Give us your anger, your rage, your heartbreak. Your hope, your strength, and your power.

Selected pieces will be featured in a special issue on the Grim & Gilded website.

Grim & Gilded was founded upon the idea of finding beauty within the darkness - the feverish seeking for threads of gold among the twisting gloom and dusky shadows. The brightest ray of sunlight cannot reach all dark corners of humanity, and it is here that exists the places that hold the morbid horrors we cannot tear our eyes away from and the lilting lullabies that wash eerily over the deep history of the collective unconscious. G&G seeks to pull words from these places of darkness and place them, unapologetically, into the light of day where they may be studied, absorbed, and reflected upon by those who wish to confront the shadows within us all.

G&G is looking for flash fiction steeped in the genres of horror, fantasy, and dark fiction. Humanity’s oldest forms of storytelling are rooted in mythology and folklore - narratives that played a fundamental role in society, whether it be to explain the origin of the world or to warn against evil in the vast and seemingly infinite wilderness. This is not to say all submissions are required to be contained within some version of Middle Earth - far from it. We want to read from BOTH literary and genre spaces, with strong characters that reflect upon the human condition and facets of society. Urban/contemporary fantasy, magical realism, and science fiction are all welcome and encouraged.

Guidelines
While G&G is open to both literary and genre fiction, we are most interested in stories that contain elements of fantasy, horror, high fantasy, magical realism, science fiction, urban fantasy, horror, contemporary fantasy, fairy tales, Gothic, steampunk, and thriller.

  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with standard one-inch margins.
  • Submissions should be no longer than 1,000 words.
  • You may submit up to three flash fiction pieces per submission. If submitting multiple pieces, please submit all in one document. Each piece can be 1,000 words or less.
  • Please use .doc, .docx, or .odt file formats only.
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed - but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • At this time, Grim & Gilded only accepts previously unpublished work.

We're looking for poetry that peels back the layers and exposes both the rot of the earth and the diamonds deep within. We want to read raw, dark prose that turns us introspective, that sheds light on emotions we'd rather not acknowledge or talk about, and finds beauty in the ghoulish and the morbid.

Guidelines

Elements of fantasy, horror, magical realism, science fiction, and fairy tales are welcome in poetry submissions, though they are not required.

  • Please use .doc, .docx, or .odt file formats only.
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed - but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible.
